Street Photography Wednesdays
This is a 5 exposure HDR plus a shot exposed just for the stars. Like some of the other night shots from this outing I took a shot exposed just for the stars and made some levels adjustments in CS5. I processed the HDR and then masked in the stars shot for the finished photo. This is my brother in law(flickr member leppard717) taking some light trail shots from the Belvedere in Louisville. You can see the second street bridge and the new KFC Yum Center peeking out from behind the other buildings.

Erg Chebbi
Minimalism Tuesdays
Erg Chebbi (Arabic: عرق الشبي), in southeastern Morocco, is one of two Saharan ergs in the northwest African nation. Its distinctive ergs — large dunes formed by wind-blown sand — reach up to 150 meters high, and form a composite erg 22 km long (north-south) and 5 km wide. The village of Merzouga, about ten hours from Marrakesh or Fez, is located near the edge of the dunes. The dunes are a popular tourist destination.
The erg is located roughly 40 kilometers southeast of Erfoud. The locals believe that these dunes were sent as punishment for turning away a weary traveler from the desert. They say that shortly thereafter, the gods made the dunes pile up outside their town as a lesson never to send away another needy wanderer.

The Elder
Monochrome Mondays
I couldn't resist revisiting this stately gentleman. You can see a less formal candid of him here www.flickr.com/photos/petefoley/5257704602/. As with my last post, he is of the Akha people, a hill tribe of subsistence farmers known for their beaded handicrafts, who live in the border regions between northern Thailand, Laos, and Myanmar (formally Burma) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Akha_people.

House of The Rising Sun
Weekend Showcase Theme
It was a cold Saturday morning with a tiny bit of snow which hasn't melted since it came down on Thursday. Perfect weather to be in bed. I had a hard time trying to convince myself to get up and go out to take pictures. I did manage, though.
The house you are looking at is actually called Jones Point Lighthouse. I, instead, named this picture House of The Rising Sun just because I recently heard a song of the same name on this NBC show called The Sing-off (if you haven't heard of it, check it out. It's awesome.) and I love it.

Biker...
Street Photography Wednesdays
Today, I went out with my photography students to take some snow pictures.
As most places in Europe, we had a lot of snow and I thought it was time my students went outside and tried to show me what they learned last couple of weeks.
Can't wait to see the results.

Is it that time yet ?
Monochrome Mondays
It is hard to keep up with the grandchildren sometimes. While they are out there at the park, running around, parents taking pictures of their little ones trying to catch every moment, these senior ones are just taking a break.... the young guy with the umbrella in hand is unable to join the party and hoping to get in action when the hell eventually breaks loose :)

I guess some turtles are luckier...
TGIF Theme
Whenever I am at home I am always looking for images that I can capture with my camera. My wife has given me so many of those opportunities that I have decided to start a set devoted to her (can you guess how many points I am going to score with this? hehehehe). They are all silly images yet, who said that photography is all about serious stuff?

Guardian Of The Bikes
Street Photography Wednesdays
Taken in Tokyo, Japan.
I have never seen so many bikes on (narrow) roads and streets like in Japan. They're milling about really everywhere.
Thus, most bikes cannot just be parked on the street, cause there are cars, pedestrians and other bikes already. The solution is clear: A bike parking area. People can just leave their bikes there. Just around my station are about 4 or 5 of these parking areas.
The other day I also saw a queue of about 15 people waiting for access to the parking lot.

A famous spot for a typical Yosemite photo op. Still one of my favorite spots to shoot from. Located along the Merced River in Yosemite National Park, California.

Favorite Me theme
This was taken in Aandijk, North Holland, the Netherlands, in late spring. The town name "Aandijk" literally means "on the dike". We were in fact walking on the dike, and behind the dike is Lake Ijssel, which used to be a sea (Zuiderzee i.e. Southern Sea).
This is just a part of thousands of km of dikes in Holland.

He was different...
Submitted into the TWTME Gallery
The boy in focus, he was different than the rest of the Afghan children that gathered around us. He seemed stronger and more aware and suspicious of our intent. He walked around with a swagger that told you he wasn't afraid and seemed to have an attitude of almost challenging our presence. As he stood there in the crowd of his peers he stood out like he was standing alone. I instantly noticed him and knew he was different than the rest.
It wasn’t the boy’s age, his looks or what he wore, but instead it was his body language that suggested this kid has a different outlook on his surroundings than the other kids around. He seemed to possess a smarter, more educated view of his country and the conflict brewing day in and day out. When this boy grows into a man, he will become a leader. I just hope his potential is not wasted upon the likes of the Taliban and other religious fanatics.
I found it disheartening as I stood there amongst my peers, wondering if I was the only one capable of sensing the boy’s imminent future, as I feared that he would fall into the hands of the enemy, becoming my enemy.
Why don’t we have teams of men and women out there in the Afghan economy trying to catch these young Afghan future leaders before it is too late? If we do have them in the form of a “secret” operation, we do not have nearly enough to even hope to be the start of that first drop in the bucket.
Sometimes it all seems like such a waste; a waste of human potential, ability and life.
Photo taken by me in Southern Afghanistan in 2010, using a Canon 7D and 24-105mm f/4 L IS USM.

Weekend Showcase
I remember that night 30 years ago. It had just made the 11 o'clock news and I was stunned. The next morning at school it was all we could talk about. I remember my Grade 8 history teacher, Ms. Chapdelaine, her voice quivering when she mentioned it in class. She grew up listening to The Beatles and Lennon and I could see his death had profoundly affected her. I knew The Beatles's music at that age having spent the previous summer listening to as much as could of them on the radio. After his death I became even more obsessed with knowing their history. They still are one of my favourites.

Christmas: COMMENCED.
Self Portrait Thursdays
This week we pulled out all the Christmas crap from the attic to start decorating. I am not a holiday decorator kind of person. My mom is, but somehow it didn't rub off on me. I guess out of all holidays..... I do like decorating for Christmas the most, but getting started and finding the energy and desire to is always a chore.
Every year its the same fight with the tangle of lights and the Christmas tree and what to put where and who is going to do it. I thought this photo would be a fun display of my love/hate relationship with Christmas lights. I think they slowly knot themselves all year long inside the box in the attic to spite me. I have little patience when it comes to untangling them.
I know this "Christmas-lights-wrapped-around-you" photo has been done before, but here is my take on it. :) And holy crap, this took some abdominal muscles! Not to mention I had a stomach full of Thai food....
